Increase in Top Prospects on Opening Day Rosters
If it seems like a higher number of top prospects are making their way onto Opening Day rosters, you’re absolutely correct.
The 2026 MLB season has commenced with the most Top 100 prospects in the big leagues since MLB Pipeline first launched its Top 100 list in 2012.
A total of 20 Top 100 prospects are included in Opening Day rosters, nearly double the 15-season average of 11. The only other year with a higher count was 2021, which had 19 prospects.
Remarkable Talent on Display
This year’s prospects are indeed some of the brightest young talents in baseball. Notable players starting in the Majors include Tigers infielder Kevin McGonigle (MLB No. 2), Cardinals infielder JJ Wetherholt (MLB No. 5), and Mets right-hander Nolan McLean (MLB No. 6), among others.
This season showcases an impressive quartet of the top 10 prospects, along with seven from the top 20 and 11 from the top 50. Such tallies haven’t been seen in over 20 years, harking back to the exceptional 2006 season. It’s noteworthy that these figures exclude postseason standout Trey Yesavage (MLB No. 12), who starts the season on the injured list with the Blue Jays.
Trend Towards Rookie Talent
Interestingly, there are only 35 ranked prospects on Opening Day rosters, marking the lowest figure since at least 2016. However, teams are increasingly leaning toward their best young talent, as nearly two-thirds of those on Opening Day rosters also appear in the Top 100.
A contributing factor to this increase is that several players on the brink of graduation last year retained their prospect status over the offseason. Players like McLean, Basallo, and Orioles outfielder Dylan Beavers (MLB No. 69) were all just days away from graduation.
Exploring Promotion Incentives
The influx of prospects starting the season in the big leagues also raises the chances for teams to obtain a Prospect Promotion Incentive pick. Eligible players who appear on Top 100 lists can earn their teams a Draft pick after the first round if they rack up a full year of MLB service (172 days) and win Rookie of the Year honors.
While a few constraints exist that prevent some rookie-eligible players from earning a PPI pick, the trend indicates teams are clearly responding to incentives, with 19 PPI-eligible players at the start of this season being the highest in recent years. Notably, five Top 100 prospects are set to make their MLB debuts.
