Karnataka MLAs Granted Free IPL Tickets
Members of the Karnataka Assembly, who previously declined to wait in line for IPL tickets, will now receive them for free. Reports indicate that these MLAs had expressed grievances about being treated disrespectfully by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and had requested tickets based on their “VIP” status. They will also have access to a separate stand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which will host the opening IPL match between RCB and SRH. Additionally, each MLA will receive three tickets for every forthcoming game at the stadium.
Meeting with Chief Minister
The situation shifted after KSCA President and renowned former cricketer Venkatesh Prasad met with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, presenting an official invitation for the match. This interaction appears to have led to the MLAs successfully obtaining their tickets after they voiced their concerns.
Response from Government Officials
Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, revealed that he had requested the KSCA to provide two tickets for each MLA, enabling them to bring family members due to the time constraints. Although the Speaker had initially requested four tickets, many have already been sold, complicating the situation further.
Opposition to Special Privileges
In the midst of this controversy, Karnataka BJP President BY Vijayendra distanced himself from the demand for complimentary tickets, asserting that legislators should not seek special treatment. He criticized the timing of such requests, especially in light of recent tragedies, and expressed concern over perceived insensitivity among political leaders.
Criticism from Party Members
BJP member Tejasvi Surya condemned the Congress-led government for this issue. He expressed solidarity with Venkatesh Prasad, outlining the absurdity of a situation where a respected figure had to seek favor from politicians over a standard job. Surya’s comments highlighted a broader critique of entitlement among the political class.
MLAs’ Initial Demands
Earlier, Congress legislator Vijayanand Kashappanavar remarked that MLAs from all parties sought special arrangements for IPL tickets, expressing dissatisfaction with being required to queue for them. In light of their VIP status, they felt they deserved better treatment than being subjected to public queues.
Statements from MLAs
Despite objections from Tejasvi Surya, Kashappanavar insisted the demand for privileged access to tickets was supported by multiple political leaders, highlighting a broader concern regarding the treatment of MLAs. He emphasized that they are entitled to respect and should not have to navigate online reservations like ordinary citizens.
