England manager Thomas Tuchel defended Ben White after the defender faced boos from parts of the Wembley crowd during the 1-1 draw against Uruguay.
White, making his first appearance for England since departing the Qatar World Cup in 2022, was met with boos upon being substituted in and again when his name was called after he scored his inaugural international goal in the 81st minute.
In the dying moments of the match, he gave away a penalty which allowed Uruguay to equalize.
“I noticed he was booed,” Tuchel commented in the post-match press briefing. “I didn’t hear it on the field as I was preoccupied with substitutions and instructions, so it cannot be the majority. There were some boos mixed in, which is disappointing because we protect our players. He was outstanding in camp and earned his spot.”
Tuchel continued, “He deserved to start and nearly secured the win for us. Yet I also understand that this has occurred to other players here before. He will need to handle this criticism. We will always support him, and I hope we can move forward, as he is eager to contribute more and we are prepared to offer him that chance.”
Reasons Behind the Booing
White’s selection to replace Jarell Quansah was somewhat controversial. Tuchel acknowledged that the defender would need to reconcile with teammates he had left behind when he departed the 2022 World Cup due to personal matters. He had previously declined a call-up from Gareth Southgate following a disagreement with then-assistant coach Steve Holland.
England Fans’ Message
The jeers directed at White reflected the sentiments of many England fans who still seem unhappy with his previous absence from the national team. This may suggest that fans are hesitant to see him included in the squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
Tuchel on the Controversial Penalty
Tuchel criticized the penalty awarded against White, describing it as “very soft.” He acknowledged that there was contact but felt that the striker was attempting to draw a foul. “I was surprised VAR was involved since I didn’t see a substantial infraction,” Tuchel noted, adding that he believed the referee’s initial call should have stood.
