Bluesky Introduces AI Assistant App, Attie
The team at Bluesky has launched a new application that diverges from its social networking roots—introducing Attie, an AI assistant designed for users to create custom algorithms and tailored feeds. Soon, users will even be able to vibe-code their own apps.
Unveiling at Atmosphere Conference
During the Atmosphere conference, Bluesky’s former CEO, Jay Graber, who now serves as chief innovation officer, along with CTO Paul Frazee, showcased Attie to attendees. The application is built using Anthropic’s Claude technology and operates on Bluesky’s AT Protocol, allowing conference participants to be the first beta testers of this innovative tool.
A Standalone Product
Interim CEO Toni Schneider clarified that Attie is a distinct product separate from the Bluesky app. While many features have been integrated within Bluesky, Attie represents a new standalone offering, developed by Graber’s new team.
Creating Custom Feeds
Attie empowers users to generate their own custom feeds simply by using natural language commands, akin to interacting with any AI chatbot. Users will log in with their Atmosphere credentials, allowing Attie to discern their preferences and relevant discussions, as Bluesky functions as an open system sharing data across apps.
A People-Centric AI
Schneider emphasized that while Attie is AI-driven, its primary focus is on benefiting users. The platform aims to democratize customization by enabling users to shape their feeds without requiring coding skills. “It’s just the start of enabling more individuals to build on the Atmosphere,” he noted.
Future Plans for Attie
Currently, Attie allows users to create and view personalized feeds, with future plans for enhanced functionalities, including the potential for users to develop their own social apps and tools. Graber expressed a vision for AI to serve people rather than platforms, advocating for user empowerment through an open protocol.
Funding and Sustainability
Bluesky recently secured $100 million in funding, providing them with a robust financial runway to address challenges like enhancing privacy controls and exploring monetization strategies for the platform, which boasts over 43 million users. While there are no immediate plans for crypto integration, Schneider indicated that alternative monetization approaches, such as subscriptions or hosting services, may be considered in the future.
