This year’s Sunshine Swing on the WTA Tour, powered by Mercedes-Benz, concluded last week, marking only the sixth instance of a successful Sunshine Double in the Open Era. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka triumphed in both Indian Wells and Miami, successfully defending her Miami title while losing just one set along the way.
With this success, Sabalenka’s trophy collection has reached 24, including 15 titles at the WTA 1000 level or higher, and she has already secured three titles in 2026. She remains the only player to have clinched multiple titles this season and became the first woman since Iga Swiatek in 2022 to achieve the Sunshine Double.
The day after Sabalenka completed her accomplishment, ATP No. 2 Jannik Sinner also achieved his own Sunshine Double. This feat marks just the fourth time a WTA player and an ATP player have conquered both Indian Wells and Miami in the same year, following in the footsteps of Stefanie Graf and Pete Sampras in 1994, Kim Clijsters and Roger Federer in 2005, and Victoria Azarenka and Novak Djokovic in 2016.
Coco Gauff, the Miami runner-up, made the highest leap in the recent PIF WTA Rankings. The 22-year-old reached her 15th career final, which was also her inaugural final at a tournament in her home state. She ascended one spot from No. 4 to No. 3, swapping places with Iga Swiatek.
Karolina Muchova continued her solid start to the season by reaching the Miami semifinals. The former world No. 8, who claimed her first WTA 1000 title in Doha last month, moved up three ranks, from No. 14 to No. 11.
Notably, 18-year-old Iva Jovic is the sole player in the Top 20 to achieve a new career high this week. The American teenager reached the third round in Miami and climbed one position to No. 16.
Baptiste and Gibson Continue Their Progress
Hailey Baptiste and Talia Gibson showcased their continued growth in 2026 ahead of Miami. Baptiste reached her first career semifinal in Abu Dhabi, while Gibson advanced to the quarterfinals in Indian Wells as a qualifier. In Miami, both players delivered commendable performances once again.
Baptiste upset Elina Svitolina in the third round for her second career victory over a Top 10 player, progressing to her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal. The 24-year-old American surged 12 positions from No. 45 to No. 33.
Gibson also came through qualifying again and reached the fourth round by defeating Naomi Osaka and Jovic. The 21-year-old Australian had not secured a win against anyone ranked inside the Top 60 prior to Indian Wells but has claimed five Top 20 victories in March alone, climbing 12 spots from No. 68 to No. 56.
New Faces in the Top 100
This week sees the introduction of three players into the Top 100 for the first time. Ukraine’s Daria Snigur, the 2019 Wimbledon junior champion, has made a comeback this season. After reaching her first WTA semifinal in Cluj-Napoca and winning her first WTA 125 title in Oeiras, she captured the Murska Sobota ITF W75 title without dropping a set, propelling her ranking 17 spots from No. 110 to No. 93.
Meanwhile, Nikola Bartunkova won her first meeting with a Top 10 player by defeating Belinda Bencic at the Australian Open during her Grand Slam debut. The 20-year-old Czech reached the Ostrava quarterfinals and advanced six spots from No. 101 to No. 95 following her performance in Miami qualifying.
Belgium’s Hanne Vandewinkel also made her Top 100 debut after a notable 19-match ITF winning streak that saw her claim titles in Pune W75, Bengaluru W100, and Trnava W75. Ranked No. 163 as recently as last October, Vandewinkel ascended eight positions from No. 104 to No. 96 this week.
