Federal Prosecutors Investigate Polymarket
Federal prosecutors in New York have met with Polymarket representatives to explore how current insider trading laws may be relevant to questionable bets, as reported by CNN.
No Wrongdoing Alleged
CNN emphasized that no accusations of misconduct have been made against Polymarket, but it is not unexpected for prosecutors from the Southern District of New York to engage in discussions.
Suspicious Trades
In recent months, there have been several suspicious transactions on Polymarket, including bets on events like the start of the Iran War and the potential kidnapping of Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro. Notably, one individual reportedly made a $30,000 bet on Maduro’s capture, profiting over $430,000.
Regulatory Challenges
Polymarket was effectively banned in the U.S. in 2022 for operating without the proper licenses but acquired a holding company that offers licensed trading in 2025. The platform received regulatory approval in November 2025 and is gradually relaunching in the U.S., though it remains largely inaccessible to most Americans.
Response to Scrutiny
While Polymarket has not commented directly, the company stated: “Polymarket sets, maintains, and enforces the highest standards of market integrity,” and highlighted its cooperation with regulators. The popularity of prediction markets has surged, but concerns about gambling and insider trading loomed large among legislators and the public.
Legal Actions Against Competitors
Kalshi, another U.S. prediction market platform, faced a temporary ban in Nevada following a lawsuit from the influential gaming industry. States have begun legal actions as well, with Arizona’s Attorney General filing criminal charges against Kalshi this month, which the company disputes as baseless.
Market Integrity Measures
In an effort to ensure market integrity, both Polymarket and Kalshi have introduced new rules banning bets made with insider information, aiming to restrict participation from individuals who may influence events, especially politicians and athletes.
