The Detroit Lions have kept a low profile during the offseason, primarily due to their intention to handle a limited budget while making incremental improvements and maintaining long-term salary cap stability.
However, the team could make a significant impact in the upcoming NFL Draft. NFL.com writer Eric Edholm proposed a bold trade that would certainly attract attention across the league. Here’s what he suggested:
- 2026 first-round pick – 7th overall
- 2027 third-round pick
- TE Ben Sinnott
- TE Sam LaPorta
- 2026 first-round pick – 17th overall
- 2026 sixth-round pick – 205th overall
Trading LaPorta for an upgraded first-round pick and a third-round pick in 2027 would certainly evoke a range of reactions. Edholm explained his rationale for the trade:
“While I don’t believe LaPorta will be traded, it wouldn’t truly surprise me if he was. LaPorta has been impressive, and losing him would affect Detroit’s offense. However, it’s important to consider the long-term picture: LaPorta is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has recently undergone back surgery.”
He also added, “The rationale behind moving up to the 7th pick is likely to secure a foundational left tackle. This position remains a significant concern for the team, and their preferred choice may not be available at the 17th pick. Although risky, it could be a wise financial and strategic decision, and General Manager Brad Holmes isn’t afraid to make bold moves in the first round.”
In summary, trading LaPorta would assist the Lions in managing their salary cap by avoiding a costly extension while securing a franchise left tackle would finalize their offensive line improvements.
While the trade is well-argued, it may provoke strong reactions from fans who cherish LaPorta. But would the Lions actually execute this deal? That’s worth exploring.
General Manager Brad Holmes has never hesitated to make bold decisions to secure key players in the draft. If there’s a tackle he particularly values, an aggressive move could follow, especially since the Lions have indicated that addressing the offensive line is their top priority.
Additonally, the potential salary cap savings are considerable. Edholm highlights that tight end extensions are nearing $20 million annually. With impending extensions for running back Jahmyr Gibbs and linebacker Jack Campbell, LaPorta could become redundant. Holmes has previously traded tight end T.J. Hockenson and found a solid replacement in LaPorta. This showcases Holmes’s willingness to part with valuable players before extending their contracts.
Reasons the Lions Might Not Pursue This Trade
First, the Lions likely value LaPorta more than is acknowledged. Trade rumors have circulated for over a year, with fans questioning how the team will handle their 2023 draft class. Yet, the Lions have not shown any indication of wanting to part with LaPorta, with Holmes emphasizing a desire to keep all first four picks from the 2023 draft long-term.
Furthermore, Lions coach Dan Campbell recently discussed the need to enhance the running game, noting the impact of losing their top tight ends at the end of the last season. “Losing LaPorta and Brock Wright significantly affected our performance,” Campbell stated.
LaPorta made a remarkable debut season, recording 86 catches, 889 yards, and 10 touchdowns. His skills as a run blocker have also evolved, making him a vital element in the Lions’ run-focused strategy.
Finally, the Lions might still secure a promising long-term offensive tackle without moving up from their 17th position. Projections indicate a range of first-round offensive tackle talent, suggesting a trade up may not be necessary. Moreover, this proposed trade does not add any extra picks, focusing instead on upgrading two existing ones.
Though it’s an intriguing concept, I concur with Edholm: I would be surprised if the Lions actually proceed with such a trade.
