The train bound for Stuttgart, Germany, is quite crowded. Each stop sees fans in Germany kits getting on board, engaged in lively discussions about the German national football team and the upcoming FIFA World Cup set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Excitement Before the Match
On a late March day, Germany faces Ghana in the last international match before World Cup preparations commence. Many fans, including Dennis and Kai, began their journeys early that morning, eager to support their team in Stuttgart.
Friends from northern Germany, Dennis and Kai, donned their kits and boarded the train with enthusiasm. Dennis, a dedicated supporter since 2015, has rarely missed a game, while Kai has been a consistent fan since Euro 2024.
“Sporting the eagle emblem and singing the anthem is truly special,” Dennis shared with DW. “You connect with fellow fans and experience tournaments together — it’s always exhilarating.”
Marked Calendars for the Tournament
It is no surprise that the upcoming FIFA World Cup is a highly anticipated event for them. “I can’t wait,” said an enthusiastic Kai. “I want to fully experience the atmosphere in the cities, especially since Dennis has spoken so much about it.”
“The excitement begins two years prior; you start saving and planning,” added Dennis. Both have secured tickets for Germany’s group matches, looking forward to the event despite the current political climate in the United States.
Concerns from the Community
However, not everyone shares their optimism. Former Germany head coach Joachim Löw recently cautioned against making the trip to North America, highlighting the dangers of traveling to a nation currently at war due to geopolitical tensions.
Political critiques have also emerged, with Green Party politician Boris Mijatovic expressing strong concerns regarding personal freedoms and the implications of cooperating with leaders like Trump. “The surveillance of personal data cannot be ignored,” he stated, asserting that such practices invade privacy and should not be rewarded with tourism.
Mixed Feelings Among Fans
The upcoming World Cup is creating divisions among fans. Bengt Kunkel, another Germany supporter, plans to watch the event from home due to concerns over political manipulation and issues like press freedom. The costs associated with attending the matches also deter him, as expenses for just the group stage could reach between €5,000 and €8,000.
Kunkel acknowledges the differing opinions but affirms that supporting the national team should remain possible despite the surrounding controversies. “Let’s embrace the summer of the World Cup and support our team,” he added with hope, reflecting the sentiment of Dennis and Kai, who are cautiously optimistic about the tournament being a festive celebration.
