A Florida judge granted Tiger Woods permission on Wednesday to leave the country for an extensive inpatient treatment program as he faces misdemeanor charges for driving under the influence, as reported by multiple sources citing court documents.
Judge Darren Steele of Martin County approved the travel request made by Woods’s attorney, Douglas Duncan. The lawyer emphasized the golf legend’s need for a “highly individualized, medically integrated program” away from the scrutiny of the media and public.
Duncan’s motion, referenced by ESPN, noted that the recommendation for an international treatment facility stems from Woods’s complicated clinical presentation and the urgent requirement for care that can’t be safely provided in the U.S., given ongoing privacy invasions.
This motion was filed one day after Woods entered a not guilty plea in Florida court for charges related to driving under the influence with property damage, and his refusal to undergo a drug test following a rollover incident last Friday in Jupiter, Florida.
According to the arrest affidavit, Woods was distracted by his phone and the radio when his Land Rover hit a truck in front of him. A breathalyzer test revealed no alcohol, but Woods declined a drug test. The affidavit described him as sweating heavily with lethargic movements, bloodshot eyes, and unsteady on his feet.
Woods claimed he had not consumed alcohol, but had taken “a few” prescription medications that morning; the names were redacted. However, deputies found two hydrocodone pills in his pocket during the incident.
Duncan has represented Woods before; in May 2017, Woods was arrested for DUI and later pleaded guilty to reckless driving, resulting in probation, a fine, and community service hours. Recently, Woods announced he would temporarily step away from golf to seek treatment for his health, emphasizing the importance of this decision for his long-term recovery.
Tiger Withdraws from Ryder Cup Captaincy
The PGA of America also confirmed on Wednesday that Woods has withdrawn from consideration for the US captaincy for the 2027 Ryder Cup. They expressed full support for Woods as he prioritizes his health during this period, offering thoughts and prayers for his recovery.
Both the PGA Tour and the chairman of Augusta National expressed their support for Woods, recognizing his significant impact on the sport and emphasizing that his well-being is the priority at this time. Augusta National chairman Frank Ridley reiterated their support, noting that while Woods won’t attend the upcoming Masters Tournament, his spirit will still resonate in Augusta.
