Alpine Responds to Sabotage Claims Against Colapinto
Alpine has issued a detailed letter refuting allegations regarding the purported sabotage of Franco Colapinto’s car. Following the Chinese Grand Prix last month, Argentinian fans on social media pointed out discrepancies in the specifications of Colapinto’s vehicle compared to that of teammate Pierre Gasly’s.
During the race, Colapinto finished in 10th place, earning his first points this season; however, he trailed Gasly by 49 seconds, who secured a seventh-place finish. The letter addressed the online harassment directed at Colapinto after his involvement in Oliver Bearman’s substantial accident at Suzuka and subsequently dispelled rumors of sabotage from the Chinese event.
The team clarified that both Gasly and Colapinto utilized the same equipment, except for minor, low-performance components in China caused by gearbox changes. Alpine emphasized their commitment to both drivers, asserting, “Franco is our driver… There are no questions about sabotage or discrepancies in car specifications.” They reassured fans that any lags in upgrading parts would be transparently communicated.
Alpine stated, “It is not in the team’s interest to forgo points. Suggestions of self-sabotage are unfounded, especially as the team is currently positioned well within the competitive landscape.” They revealed that they have been the fourth fastest team in recent races and recognized the need for consistent hard work to maintain this position.
In addressing a collision between Colapinto and Esteban Ocon during the Chinese Grand Prix, the team noted that Ocon accepted responsibility for the incident. Although the situation prompted online abuse, Alpine condemned such behavior as contrary to the spirit of the sport. They also expressed disappointment at this treatment towards drivers who have contributed significantly to the team.
The letter included a reminder about the importance of community respect within Formula One, emphasizing the need for healthy debate without hostility. Alpine expressed their steadfast commitment to condemning any hateful behavior directed at any team members or rival competitors.
Looking ahead, Alpine expressed excitement for the upcoming Miami Grand Prix and assured fans of their ongoing efforts to improve performance. Franco Colapinto plans to return to his home country, aligning himself with the passionate supporters there. The team remains focused on their competitive strategies moving forward in the season.
