Footwork Takes on New Meaning in Ukraine’s Boxing Ring
They say footwork determines a boxing match, and in Ukraine, this saying resonated deeply.
Historic Bout Between Double-Amputees
This past Saturday, two Ukrainian veterans squared off on prosthetic legs in what has been dubbed the world’s first competitive match between double-amputee fighters. The bout took place in Brovary, near Kyiv, across three two-minute rounds that established a distinct rhythm of its own.
Measuring Movement
Unlike typical boxing matches, there was minimal circling around the ring. Each boxer moved thoughtfully, carefully placing their steps as they sought balance. Once they found their footing, the exchanges mirrored those familiar to boxing enthusiasts, with quick jabs and short combination strikes.
Resilience Amidst Challenges
Prior to the fight, the audience had to evacuate due to an air raid alert as Russia launched attacks on Ukraine throughout the day. Upon returning, they witnessed something unique that evoked mixed reactions initially, but soon they erupted in cheers—not solely for the punches, but in awe of the fighters’ determination to rise after each fall.
A Message of Strength
At the weigh-in, Artem Khrebet, a veteran who lost both legs to artillery fire in 2022, expressed, “I’m boxing to remind people that, no matter what happens, Ukraine and its people will endure.” He and his fellow veteran, Mykhailo Drobotenko, aimed to inspire others with similar injuries to continue pushing forward.
The Role of Boxing in Healing
Scott Welch, a former British heavyweight champion, emphasized the significance of boxing for veterans. He has advocated for adaptive boxing for amputees, typically conducted in wheelchairs. He believes the sport can help rebuild confidence and provide an outlet for mental health challenges.
Thriving in Adversity
Though the fight showcased skill and competition, it also highlighted a deeper camaraderie between the boxers. Igor Faniian, their coach, noted that although adaptive boxing is usually devoid of strict winning and losing, both fighters were driven to compete fiercely. In the end, Khrebet emerged victorious, claiming the championship belt, while Drobotenko already sought a rematch, showcasing an unfaltering spirit.
