The gates are open, and Coachella is officially in full swing.
The 2026 edition of the Coachella Valley’s renowned music festival began on Friday, with an expected daily attendance of around 125,000. The event features headliners like Justin Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter, and Karol G, along with over 100 acts performing on eight stages. Anticipation is high for news from Coachella this weekend, and even before the music began, social media buzzed with discussions, gossip, and controversies.
In recent days, a recurring theme among content creators has emerged regarding abrupt Airbnb cancellations. Many claim their reservations were canceled, likely so owners could rebook their properties at significantly higher prices amid the festival’s popularity. Numerous posts suggest this has become a trend driven by greed, with many users sharing similar experiences in the comments.
Sophie Rain, a TikTok influencer with 15 million followers, shared her ordeal of having an Airbnb booking canceled three days before Coachella, resulting in a hefty rebooking fee of $83,375 after originally paying $29,000. Another user, Haylee Dahlgren, echoed this experience, stating she faced a similar cancellation just a week before the festival.
One commenter attributed their cancellation to a letter from the city of Palm Springs, claiming it was due to local regulations. Many others responded to the rising cancellation claims by creating a Reddit thread dedicated to sharing such experiences. However, the City of Palm Springs has denied sending letters demanding cancellations, and Airbnb has reported no significant uptick in cancellations for the weekend.
Rentals often appear on multiple platforms, allowing owners to cancel reservations and seek higher bookings elsewhere, occasionally leading to misunderstandings. There are also reports of properties going for exorbitant prices due to high demand, with budget accommodations nearing $600-$700 per night. In contrast, Coachella tickets are going for thousands, with general admission priced at $5,263.
Another developing narrative is the withdrawal of invitations for influencers from brand partners right before the festival. Many creators, such as Kelsey Kotzur, have reported being invited only to have those invitations revoked due to capacity issues. Skeptics suggest some of these claims could be attempts by creators to gain attention or seek alternative sponsorships. Regardless, Coachella continues to unfold, available for viewing without the necessity of brand invitations or reservations.
