Bristol Motor Speedway (Bristol, Tenn.) — The young driver finally achieved his goal, or rather, the grandson did.
Ty Gibbs, the grandson of Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs, clinched his first Cup race victory in his 131st attempt, leading the final 25 laps to secure an overtime win at Bristol Motor Speedway.
This marked the 229th Cup triumph for Joe Gibbs Racing, which is in its 35th season this year. Notably, it was the first Cup win for a driver with the Gibbs surname.
“This is a massive moment for our family,” Joe Gibbs remarked during his post-race press conference. “Ty has faced numerous challenges, and succeeding at this level is not easy; it’s the best of the best.”
At just 23, Ty had already tasted victory and success in earlier racing series but encountered ups and downs during his over three-year tenure in the Cup Series, achieving two second-place finishes and 21 top-five finishes.
His road hasn’t been without difficulties; his father, Coy Gibbs, passed away unexpectedly on the same night that Ty won the O’Reilly Series championship in November 2022. The lack of a win in a traditionally successful team led some critics to question his worthiness of a spot on the family-run team.
“I always believed I could do it,” Ty Gibbs stated after the race. “It’s about putting it all together. We’ve had some strong performances in the past.” He added, “While some may criticize my position, I just focus on working hard. I genuinely love racing, so it’s enjoyable.”
