With the NFL draft just days away, I’ve put together my final mock draft for the Steelers. Based on the positive feedback from my previous mock, I aim to meet those expectations again. This analysis assumes Aaron Rodgers will return, and I’m selecting players based on what I believe the team will do rather than my personal preferences. Unlike before, I’ve included trades, as it’s unlikely the Steelers will make all 12 selections.
Round 1 – Pick 21: OLAIVAVEGA IOANE/OG/PENN STATE
Omar Khan and Andy Weidl have focused on strengthening the offensive line since Khan took charge as GM. Ioane would be the Steelers’ third first-round offensive lineman in four years. While not the flashiest choice, he is the top guard in the draft and has All-Pro potential. The Steelers hosted him for a pre-draft visit, which historically correlates with their first-round picks. I don’t expect that trend to change this year.
Round 2 – Pick 53: GERMIE BERNARD/WR/ALABAMA
This pick remains from my original mock. The Steelers met with Bernard both at the Combine and during a pre-draft visit. He is a promising slot receiver known for his route running and blocking abilities. With the need for a receiver among their top two picks, Bernard represents a strong option remaining in the second round.
TRADE: STEELERS SEND NO. 76 AND NO. 121 TO THE SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS FOR NO. 58
Before we discuss the next selection, let me clarify the rationale behind the trade. The 49ers are limited to just six picks in the draft, making this trade mutually beneficial. Although some trade value charts suggest the Steelers lost out, it’s unlikely San Francisco would drop 18 spots without a substantial selection in return.
Round 2 – Pick 58: DOMONIQUE ORANGE/DT/IOWA STATE
This selection may be a bit of a stretch, as the Steelers haven’t shown significant pre-draft interest in Orange. However, he is the kind of player that would benefit the team. He can play as both a nose tackle and an end, excelling in run defense while offering some pass-rushing ability. Despite recent signings, the Steelers still need to fortify their defensive line, especially to improve against the run.
Round 3 – Pick 85: DAYLEN EVERETTE/CB/GEORGIA
Both Mike McCarthy and Omar Khan attended Georgia’s Pro Day, and there was notable interaction with Everette during the event. The Steelers have shown considerable interest in cornerbacks this draft season, attending their pre-draft visits. Everette is an athletic cornerback who could develop alongside existing talent and seems a likely choice in this round.
Final Thoughts/Recap
The draft selections feature a balanced approach, with five offensive and four defensive picks. While I would have preferred to select a tight end earlier, adding depth at linebacker and safety is promising. Many of the team’s primary needs are addressed early, particularly on the offensive line. Although trading up for Orange may require some projection, enhancing the trenches remains a priority, albeit there’s still room for debate on the timing of defensive line selections.
