Pat Perez’s Career Journey: From PGA to LIV and Back
Pat Perez enjoyed a remarkable career on the PGA Tour, achieving three wins and 64 top-10 finishes over 515 starts, earning nearly $30 million. However, in 2022, the allure of LIV Golf proved too tempting for the then 46-year-old, who described joining LIV as akin to winning the lottery.
Life After Joining LIV
As part of Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces team, Perez participated in LIV for three years, though he never ranked better than 28th individually. Following a disappointing 48th-place finish in the 2024 season, Perez was let go. Nevertheless, his vibrant personality caught LIV’s attention, and they hired him as a commentator.
A Year Away from Golf
Perez took a break from playing, not picking up his clubs for nearly a year. From January to September 2025, he didn’t hit a single shot. “I didn’t even think about it,” he noted. Unsure of his return to professional golf, he focused on his television role.
Seeking Reinstatement
After joining LIV, Perez was suspended by the PGA Tour. By late 2025, he applied for reinstatement, which was granted with the condition that he sit out the entire 2026 season, losing precious eligibility for the Champions Tour upon turning 50 in March 2026.
Preparing for Comeback
Perez began to refocus on his golf career, realizing he could still participate in three of the five senior majors not run by PGA: the Senior PGA Championship, the U.S. Senior Open, and the Senior Open Championship. Speaking from the Senior PGA Championship at Concession Golf Club, he expressed his excitement about returning to competitive play after a significant break.
The Challenges of Returning
After nearly nine months away from the sport, adjusting back to golf proved challenging. “My hand strength was gone. My arm strength was gone. All the muscles I hadn’t used in so long were stiff,” he admitted, noting his age also added to the difficulty.
Looking Ahead
With a six-month plan in place, Perez started his return at the Senior PGA Championship, opening with a three-under 69. He climbed to five under after shooting a 70, placing him in contention as he looks forward to a robust schedule in 2027. “From what I hear, this tour requires a strong start from ages 50 to 55, and I plan to make the most of it,” he stated.
