Welcome back to Prime Tire! Today, we’re examining Max Verstappen’s situation as we approach the midpoint of the season, starting with the Hungarian Grand Prix on July 26, barring any race cancellations from the schedule.
I’m Alex, and Madeline Coleman will join us later.
Debating Verstappen’s Future
As I left the Miami Grand Prix, I questioned whether McLaren’s resurgence at Hard Rock Stadium marked a true return to form. However, my focus should have shifted to Red Bull and Verstappen. Their strong performance in Miami qualifying was overshadowed by Verstappen’s disappointing start in the race, a topic we analyzed previously.
With F1 on break before the Canadian GP, Verstappen’s name will dominate headlines. He’s embarking on a side quest, entering the 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours this Saturday, aiming to become the first F1 driver to win the race since 2018.
- If successful, he would join a small group, the last F1 world champion to win this race was Niki Lauda in 1973.
- Notably, the last full-time F1 racer to achieve this feat was Pedro Lamy in 2010.
This race coincides with Verstappen’s contemplation of his F1 future, sparked by discussions regarding his potential commitment to Red Bull beyond 2027.
Red Bull’s Future Options
In Miami, Verstappen was bolstered by various Red Bull upgrades, making his car more competitive. However, with strong contenders like Mercedes and a challenging points gap to close, securing a top position in the drivers’ standings remains tough for him.
Currently, he is 54 points behind George Russell and 74 points from leader Kimi Antonelli, highlighting the difficult path ahead.
This situation leads us to consider potential successors for Verstappen should he choose to leave Red Bull. Candidates may include:
- Oscar Piastri: A promising talent linked with Red Bull after his 2025 title fight.
- Carlos Sainz: The top driver outside the top teams, now with a fresh management team.
- Alex Albon: A more skilled driver than during his earlier Red Bull stint.
- Pierre Gasly: Also demonstrating substantial improvement since leaving Red Bull.
If Verstappen departs, it’s likely that Red Bull would look beyond its currently limited driving talent pool.
Updates from Madeline Coleman
The Canadian Grand Prix will feature Autumn Fisher, an F4 driver, as a wild-card entry for F1 Academy, representing her home country. Such wild-card entries provide emerging talents opportunities to showcase their skills.
The initiative has successfully helped several drivers transition to full-time seats in F1 Academy.
Quick Takes
In summary, a week rich with news includes discussions about Ford’s potential interest in Verstappen for future racing events and BMW’s recent success at the WEC’s 6 Hours of Spa.
Additionally, rumors continue about the possibility of rescheduling some canceled races in the 2026 calendar, alongside impressive statistics from Antonelli’s season start.
