The Legacy of Rip Hamilton’s Visit
In Detroit basketball culture, few symbols resonate as much as the mask worn by Richard “Rip” Hamilton. When he visited Ronald Brown Academy, an elementary school in the metro area, he certainly made a lasting impression.
The Mask and Its Significance
During the early 2000s, at the height of Hamilton’s career with the Pistons, he was famous for donning a plastic protective mask during games to protect his nose, which had suffered multiple fractures. His visit included bringing the mask for students from Pre-K to Grade 8, some of whom even got the chance to wear it.
From Student to Musician
Unbeknownst to Hamilton, one of those students—a 10-year-old boy—would later make his own impact on the Pistons nearly two decades later. Gerald Allen, now 33 and better known as rapper Gmac Cash, has composed the popular anthem “Pistons Won Again,” which resonates with fans of the current Pistons team.
A New Anthem for a New Era
His song has become a fan favorite at Little Caesars Arena, often played after wins, and even requested by players through the team’s social media channels. Allen has consistently shared his unique perspective on Detroit through his music, touching on various themes that resonate with locals.
Shining a Positive Light on Detroit
Allen aims to shift the focus from negative stereotypes often associated with Detroit, emphasizing the city’s positive aspects. “Detroit has been represented for… drugs and violence for so long,” he remarked, stating his desire to highlight the vibrant, diverse experiences of the city.
Gaining Recognition
In January 2025, after the success of his earlier songs about the Tigers and Lions, he recorded “Pistons Won Again.” The song quickly gained popularity, becoming a staple for the team and prominently featured in social media content following games.
A Personal Connection to the Team
Reflecting on his experiences, Allen noted the special connection he feels with the Pistons, particularly due to his family’s longstanding devotion to the team since their championship wins in 1989 and 1990. He cherishes the vivid memories from the 2004 championship parade.
