James Harden contributed significantly to the Cavaliers’ overtime victory in Game 5, recording 30 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists.
The Cleveland Cavaliers claimed a crucial playoff victory on the road, even with Donovan Mitchell struggling with his shooting.
In a pivotal Game 5 of their semifinal series, the Cavs now have the opportunity to eliminate the top-seeded Detroit Pistons in Game 6 back in Cleveland on Friday.
This was the Cavs’ first road win in the playoffs, showcasing resilience as they outperformed their mistakes in the final moments of the fourth quarter and overtime.
In contrast, the Pistons faced disappointment despite leading for much of the game, bolstered by strong home court performance, holding a nine-point advantage with under three minutes remaining in regulation.
The series is at a critical juncture; a loss for Detroit means a Cavs-New York Knicks matchup in the Eastern Conference Finals, while a Pistons win will force a Game 7.
“You hope it propels us,” Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson stated. “This was a battle-tested win against a tough opponent, on the road.”
1. Harden Takes on a Key Role
While not flawless, James Harden found ways to make critical shots when they mattered most, compensating for Mitchell’s struggles. Even after a missed free throw in overtime, he managed to grab the rebound and draw another foul.
2. Strus Injects Energy
Beyond his impressive 3-point shooting, Max Strus made a crucial defensive play, stripping Cade Cunningham and setting up a layup for Mitchell during a pivotal segment late in the fourth quarter.
3. Mobley Stands Out
The spotlight shone brightly on Evan Mobley, who delivered a standout performance with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 blocks, demonstrating his all-around contribution to the Cavs’ success.
4. Free Throws Favor the Cavs
The Cavs once again dominated the free throw battle, having attempted 40 more free throws than the Pistons over the last two games, a statistic both coaches have noted.
With the next game set for Friday in Cleveland, where the Cavs remain undefeated in the playoffs, it promises to be an exciting conclusion to the series.
