With the resolution of legal issues, Iowa officials are optimistic that new management can finally realize the potential of Honey Creek Resort, originally established nearly 20 years ago.
Mark Campbell, Director of the State Department of Administrative Services, remarked that the property is still full of potential, labeling its future as “the exciting part” of the transition.
Campbell referred to Honey Creek as “one of Iowa’s best kept secrets,” emphasizing that many people are still unaware of the resort’s offerings. He believes that the new operators can leverage the site’s picturesque lakeside location and available amenities more effectively.
While acknowledging the efforts of previous concessionaires, Campbell indicated that a change was necessary. “Our prior concessionaires really tried and did the best they could, and we thank them for that,” he said. “But I think it’s time we get somebody in here that has the expertise, has the knowledge, and has the ability to really hit the ground running.”
Embergrove Hospitality has now taken charge of the resort operations. A representative from the company stated that their existing portfolio of rustic, waterfront properties made this transition a natural fit. “A lot of our hotels have a cabin-by-the-lake feel, and here we are in a cabin by the lake,” noted Mark Creger from Embergrove Hospitality. “We just thought it was the perfect fit for us.”
The reopening of the resort is anticipated during the summer, with hopes for a launch as early as the July 4 holiday weekend. Guest accommodations appear nearly ready, although the pool requires significant repairs. The pool’s installation company is expected to restore it in time for a fall opening after previous operators considered replacing it with a mini-golf course.
Local tourism officials highlighted the negative impact of the resort’s shutdown in late October on the regional economy. Delaney Cruzic, Executive Director of Promoting Appanoose and Centerville Together, noted that Honey Creek is crucial for local business vibrancy. “I say it’s the key to our local economy thriving versus being just OK,” Cruzic remarked, pointing to its direct correlation with hotel-motel revenue.
On another note, Maxim Golf Group announced that the golf course could be operational within days, with plans for the 18-hole course to open a week from Saturday. Partner Josh Black stated that revitalizing neglected courses is their specialty. The current agreement is on a short-term basis, but both operators aim to demonstrate that they merit long-term partnerships.
