Melquizael Costa’s Headlining Debut
Melquizael Costa will headline his first UFC event on May 16, amidst a competitive night for MMA. While the UFC has faced rival promotions like PFL and Bellator recently, MVP’s inaugural MMA event on Netflix presents unique competition for Costa and his opponent, Arnold Allen.
MVP MMA and UFC Line-ups
The MVP MMA event features a headline match-up of Ronda Rousey versus Gina Carano, alongside notable fighters such as Nate Diaz, Mike Perry, and Francis Ngannou. In contrast, UFC Vegas 117 showcases Costa vs. Allen as the main event, with Doo Ho Choi vs. Daniel Santos serving as the co-main event. Only two ranked fighters, Ketlen Vieira and Jacqueline Cavalcanti, are featured in the prelims.
Costa on Competing with Netflix
Costa expressed confidence about his main event, stating, “It’s at APEX, and it will still be the main event. There won’t be ads during my walkout music, which was frustrating last time. I expect fans will have plenty of time to catch my fights on Paramount+ before the MVP MMA stars step into the ring.” He believes his fighting style will captivate fans more than potentially less exciting bouts on Netflix.
Choosing to Headline
When asked if he would prefer to open UFC 328 or headline his upcoming event, Costa stated he would much rather headline, viewing this as a significant opportunity. He shrugged off competition from major fighters, insisting, “I’m still going to steal the show. I trust my fighting style and believe viewers will be captivated.”
Path to a Title Shot
Costa previously predicted he would compete three times in 2026, with the last fight potentially for the championship. He maintains that a victory over Allen could propel him directly into a title fight, expecting UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski to clear a path by retiring after his next match.
Match-Up with Allen
Costa views his fight against Allen as an ideal clash, anticipating that once Allen withstands his striking, he will try to take the fight to the ground. Costa is determined to knock Allen out, aiming to be the first to do so, which he believes would solidify his place as a strong contender in the division.
Confidence Going Forward
With his wife and son attending the event in Las Vegas, Costa feels this is a pivotal moment in his career. He spoke about not picturing anything beyond defeating Allen, asserting, “I’m ready for anything, but I will be smashing him with kicks.” He is excited to be the underdog and is fueled by the naysayers who doubt him.
