DP World’s Cricket Partnership: DP World has become closely associated with cricket, thanks to its collaboration with the International Cricket Council (ICC). This partnership has solidified its presence in the cricketing community. Through the Beyond Boundaries initiative, the company commits to providing 10 cricket kits for every 100 runs scored in global events, making it a highly discussed collaboration in the sport. Daniel van Otterdijk, chief communications officer of DP World, emphasizes that they don’t view this as mere sponsorship but as a genuine partnership.
Impact of the Initiative: Since the initiative’s inception in 2023, over 3,300 cricket kits and 14 repurposed shipping containers have been delivered across eight countries and four continents, including India, South Africa, Namibia, and the UK. This effort has paved the way for thousands of young players to seize opportunities in cricket.
Cricket Kits in India: In India alone, six containers and 1,550 kits have reached cities such as Lucknow, Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Chennai. Each kit is comprehensive, containing essential items like helmets, bags, gloves, abdomen guards, bats, and balls. Otterdijk describes it as a “fully functional cricket kit” that supports young players in honing their skills.
Expanding Presence in India: While DP World also partners in golf, its relationship with the ICC has substantially increased its visibility in India. Otterdijk points out that the Indian market is the largest globally, projected to grow at around 8.3% GDP this year, making it a key consumer market despite global challenges.
Logistical Support During World Cup: During the recent Twenty20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, DP World handled approximately 55 metric tonnes of cargo to facilitate seamless broadcasting and support for the matches. This includes essential infrastructure such as screens, cameras, and cabling, which are often taken for granted by viewers.
Broader Cricket Engagement: The company began with a small footprint, supporting a few championships, but has since expanded into various formats of cricket, including T20, 50-over matches, the World Test Championship, and women’s cricket. Their commitment extends to grassroots initiatives as well, making DP World a vital partner of the ICC.
Strategic Partnerships: Beyond its ICC partnership, DP World also sponsors the DP World Asia Cup and has ties with leagues like the DP World ILT20 and SA20. Discussing their collaboration with the Delhi Capitals franchise, Otterdijk notes the importance of emotional connections and customer engagement during the IPL season.
