Black Oak Casino Resort Celebrates 25 Years
On Friday, Black Oak Casino Resort celebrated its 25th anniversary, marking a significant milestone for both the Tuolumne Rancheria and the Tuolumne community.
The celebration honors the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians, who launched the original Black Oak Casino on May 15, 2001. Initially, it was a simple metal structure containing only a few hundred slot machines, according to marketing director Luis Torres.
“What began as a smaller casino has transformed into a full-fledged resort with a hotel, dining options, bowling, recreational attractions, an RV park, entertainment venues, and much more,” Torres noted. He expressed excitement about commemorating the 25-year journey and its significance for the tribe and local community.
The staff has engaged in a year-long celebration with various events and promotions leading up to “Anniversary Week,” which includes entertainment, giveaways, fireworks, and acknowledgments of original team members who have been part of the casino since its inception.
Profits generated from legalized gambling, along with strong tribal leadership, have elevated the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians from a previously underserved community to one of the region’s key economic players and philanthropists. By the time of the casino’s 20th anniversary, the tribe had contributed over $14 million to various local causes.
Over the years, the casino has undergone significant expansions, including the addition of over 50,000 square feet of gaming space in 2005 and a six-story parking garage in 2009. Recent developments include the addition of a new family sports center, Elevate, and the Splash Zone water park, underscoring Black Oak’s commitment to attract families and diversify its offerings.
Kevin Day, Tribal Chairman, reflected on the journey, emphasizing the hard work and sacrifices made by elders that paved the way for the casino’s success. As the community gathers to celebrate this milestone, Day expressed hope for continued growth and opportunity for the people of Tuolumne Rancheria.
