Join CDC Gaming as we continue our journey through America’s Casinos. For our 11th stop, we explore Bally’s Atlantic City Hotel & Casino.
After checking out the newer Atlantic City casinos like Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in the Marina District and Ocean Casino Resort on the northern end of the Boardwalk, it was time to stroll a few blocks south to my next location.
A leisurely half-hour walk on the Boardwalk brought me to the unmistakable big, red, scripted “B” of Bally’s Atlantic City Hotel & Casino. Upon entering, I realized I was stepping back into a different era of Atlantic City’s gaming history—not necessarily in a negative way.
Nostalgic Atmosphere at Bally’s
If I had been concerned that the nostalgic Boardwalk experience I remembered might be lost forever, Bally’s reassured me, allowing a return to familiar territory. The property has retained a casual, welcoming atmosphere shaped by years of history, renovations, and market changes. Unlike Ocean, which feels like a product of a sleek, modern blue print, Bally’s has grown organically over time, reflecting the evolution of the Boardwalk.
The Historic Significance of Bally’s
Bally’s boasts a rich history dating back to the early days of Atlantic City casinos. Originally opened as the Golden Nugget in 1979, it became one of the state’s initial casinos following the 1976 referendum and Casino Control Act. Quickly becoming a popular destination, it was rebranded as Bally’s Park Place in 1987 and later Bally’s Atlantic City, growing incrementally with various expansions.
Classic Boardwalk Experience
Arriving on foot, I was immediately transported back to the classic Boardwalk casino charm. Bally’s, situated on Pacific Avenue, occupies a comparatively smaller footprint than its modern counterparts. The entrance feels less like a resort and more like an integral part of Atlantic City itself, despite the less manicured surroundings compared to places like Borgata.
First Impressions and Design
As I walked into Bally’s, the traditional vibes were unmistakable. Features like lower ceilings, plush carpets, and tighter walkways created a more intimate atmosphere. While some areas showcase upgrades, the overall design exudes a sense of being frozen in time, lending the property its unique character.
Beyond Gaming Opportunities
Compared to the likes of Borgata and Ocean, Bally’s offers limited non-gaming options. Featuring 1,100 hotel rooms and a spa, dining choices range from the upscale Park Place Prime steakhouse to casual eateries. While not as diverse, it provides enough variety to satisfy visitors without overstretching itself to create a full hospitality experience.
The Gaming Environment
Spanning 83,000 square feet, Bally’s is one of the smaller casinos in Atlantic City, with around 1,400 slot machines and 85 table games. The gaming area is compact and easy to navigate, encouraging a focus on gambling rather than wandering aimlessly amongst a vast array of machines.
