The Promising Cricket Career of Madhav Tiwari
Without the IPL, Madhav Tiwari might have been pursuing an MBA instead of a cricket career. A few years ago, he made a promise to his father, Awadhesh, to give cricket one or two years to see if he could make the Madhya Pradesh team. If not, he would focus on academics. “God gave me strength to allow him to chase his dreams,” Awadhesh shares with Cricbuzz.
Madhav’s Recent Achievements
Now 22, Madhav is still waiting for his chance in the Madhya Pradesh team and lacks a domestic record. However, he recently earned the Player of the Match award for his performance in the Delhi Capitals’ three-wicket victory over Punjab Kings, further pushing aside any thoughts of enrolling in a university.
A Family Rooted in Cricket
Awadhesh recalls how Madhav’s cricket journey began. At the age of 13, he was already playing against much older kids and impressively hitting sixes off their deliveries. Madhav’s family has a rich history in Indore, where they have run a transportation business for over 45 years.
Support and Struggles in Pursuing Cricket
Despite being an academically talented student, Awadhesh initially wanted Madhav to focus on his studies. However, the community’s acknowledgment of Madhav’s cricketing talent made it hard to ignore. As a result, Madhav was enrolled in the Amay Khurasiya Cricket Academy, which was a 20-kilometer commute from home, requiring a robust commitment supported by his family.
Enduring Commitment and Challenges
Throughout his training, Madhav showcased extraordinary determination. Even during the COVID-19 lockdown, he found a way to practice by sourcing a bowling machine, often hitting balls indoors. His dedication even led him to miss his sister’s wedding to participate in a cricket game, a decision that left both him and his father with mixed emotions.
Recognition and Opportunities in the IPL
Although a senior debut for Madhya Pradesh has eluded him despite his rare skill set as a batting all-rounder, his performance in the Madhya Pradesh T20 League caught the eye of Delhi Capitals, who signed him for INR 40 lakh. His debut was short-lived due to escalating tensions during a match against Punjab Kings, but he later showcased his talent in subsequent games.
A Bright Future Ahead
After being retained for the 2026 season, Madhav had a chance to shine against Punjab, showcasing both his bowling and batting skills. Amay Khurasiya, a key figure in his development, believes in Madhav’s potential, emphasizing his intelligence and versatility in bowling. The Tiwari family expresses deep gratitude for Khurasiya’s guidance, acknowledging his significant role in Madhav’s cricketing journey.
