Emi Martinez Overcomes Finger Injury
Aston Villa’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, managed to play in the Europa League final despite breaking a finger during warm-ups.
The 33-year-old Argentine made the decision to push through the injury after a physio’s assessment, fully aware of the potential risks, especially with Argentina’s World Cup defense looming next month.
During the match, he made two critical saves, helping Villa to secure their first major European trophy since 1982 and their first significant silverware since winning the League Cup in 1996.
“I broke my finger while warming up, but I didn’t see it as a setback,” Martinez told ESPN after the match, humorously downplaying the injury.
“This was my first broken finger, and every time I attempted to catch the ball, it would slip. But these are challenges you must tackle.”
