CHICAGO — Cubs’ Struggles Continue
Craig Counsell, typically known for his calm demeanor, is becoming increasingly frustrated with the Chicago Cubs’ offense, which continues to falter in crucial moments. After a 4-2 loss to the Houston Astros, marking the team’s sixth consecutive defeat, Counsell stated, “I think we gotta do something different.” He noted signs of diminished confidence and suggested changes in lineup or rotation might be necessary.
Missed Opportunities
The Cubs’ lack of performance was highlighted in the third inning, where they found themselves trailing 1-0. A leadoff walk and two hit-by-pitches set them up for a strong scoring chance, yet key hitters Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki failed to capitalize. Counsell expressed his frustration, stating, “Not getting runs across in that inning, that’s frustrating,” emphasizing the missed opportunities with the middle of the order.
Seeking Solutions
It’s uncommon for Counsell to voice such dissatisfaction, but it’s clear he demands improved performance. Given the team’s struggles, a lineup adjustment seems inevitable. Counsell may consider moving Happ or Suzuki down in the order or giving playing time to recent call-ups like Pedro Ramírez or Moisés Ballesteros.
Performance Issues
The Cubs are currently in a 2-10 slump, failing to produce in clutch situations. In the last twelve games, the team is just 13-for-99 with runners in scoring position. Happ reflected on the burden of needing to deliver for the team. He acknowledged the challenge, saying, “The challenge is not to put more pressure on yourself and just have your at-bat.”
The Pressure of the Moment
Counsell raised a question about whether the players feel this pressure. “The pressure’s on the pitcher in those at-bats,” he noted, suggesting a shift in the dynamics of these situations. The Cubs must focus on securing those big hits as Counsell looks to modify the lineup in the coming days.
Striking Out
Despite their strong overall statistics, Happ, Suzuki, and Dansby Swanson went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position during Friday’s game, and their overall average in such situations is just .148. Happ, in particular, is struggling, with a strikeout rate of 33.2 percent this season, making it clear adjustments are needed.
Looking Ahead
Presently, the Cubs are in a difficult position, facing their longest losing streak since 2022 after previously enjoying impressive winning runs. With four months left in the season, the trajectory of this team remains uncertain. Yet, Happ remains hopeful, stating, “We have a really good group, a really experienced group. We’ll come out the other side of it.”
