Public Abuse of Detained Palestinians: Itamar Ben-Gvir’s Disturbing Practices
Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s far-right national security minister, has gained notoriety for his public displays of cruelty towards detained Palestinians, often broadcasting these acts on video.
Under his administration, incidents of violence, including sexual assault, severe hunger, and humiliation have become normalized in Israeli prisons, with rights groups characterizing these facilities as “torture camps” for Palestinians.
Ben-Gvir has proudly claimed to oversee a “prison revolution,” asserting in 2024 that “I am proud that we have changed all of the conditions.” He frequently shares videos showcasing these visits where he demonstrates or participates in acts of abuse.
These actions have largely gone unchecked internationally until recently, when he extended his pattern of public mistreatment to foreign activists. The Israeli military intercepted over 400 individuals from 44 countries attempting to deliver aid to Gaza.
In a shocking follow-up, Ben-Gvir shared a video of security forces abusing detainees, capturing him waving an Israeli flag and mocking activists who were kneeling with their hands bound. This video, captioned “Welcome to Israel,” prompted widespread condemnation from global leaders, including those from Italy and Canada, as well as the U.S. ambassador to Israel.
In response to the massive backlash, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly criticized Ben-Gvir’s actions, stating they did not align with “Israel’s values and norms.” However, analysts argue this condemnation seems more a strategic move to mitigate international outrage than a genuine concern for human rights.
Yara Hawari, a co-director of the Palestinian Policy Network, remarked that Ben-Gvir’s public airing of detainee mistreatment should not be surprising to anyone familiar with the Palestinian perspective. Israeli statistics reveal that since the onset of conflict in October 2023, at least 98 Palestinians have died in custody, highlighting the overarching issues within the Israeli detention system.
As Israel prepares for upcoming elections, many see Ben-Gvir’s video as campaign material aimed at far-right voters, accompanied by racist rhetoric likely to escalate. Critics maintain that without tangible international consequences for Israel’s actions, abuses against Palestinians will continue unabated.
