Chicago White Sox Roster Uncertainty One Week Before Opening Day
PHOENIX — As the Chicago White Sox approach opening day in just one week, their roster dynamics remain unsettled. With numerous positions, bullpen spots, and rotation roles still unfilled, there’s a chance the Sox could leave camp without finalizing their lineup.
First-year manager Will Venable expressed uncertainty about the final roster decisions during a recent press conference at the Sox camp in Glendale, Arizona. Echoing sentiments often shared by Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, he stated, “Whenever we get it figured out, we’ll announce it.”
When asked if the roster might not be finalized until the last day of camp, which is Monday, Venable replied, “Potentially… We’ll keep you wondering and guessing for a while.” However, the atmosphere in the clubhouse appeared relaxed, with little concern expressed by the players, including those on minor-league contracts.
The Sox are currently in a rebuilding phase where the composition of the opening-day roster holds less weight than in previous seasons. Many players are expected to experience fluctuations in their positions leading into 2025. However, some key players have been confirmed: Luis Robert Jr. will start as center fielder, Sean Burke is named as the opening-day starter, and Martín Pérez and Davis Martin will join the rotation, with Korey Lee and Miguel Vargas slated for catching and third base, respectively.
Brandon Drury, who joined the squad on a minor-league deal, has shown promising form this spring, leading the team with 11 RBIs and three home runs, which positions him well for an infield role. Meanwhile, Chase Meidroth is expected to take on the shortstop position following injuries to other candidates and unsuccessful auditions.
New additions like Travis Jankowski, who recently signed a minor-league deal, could fill gaps in the outfield if veterans Andrew Benintendi and Austin Slater struggle to recover from injuries before opening day.
As camp progresses, the Sox face important decisions on pitching roles, particularly concerning Jonathan Cannon’s performance. Despite mixed results, there is optimism within the team about their potential for the upcoming season. Ultimately, while the focus is on effort and competition, fans are eager for tangible victories on the field.
