The National League East is making a strong case for being the top division in baseball. Although it may lack the breadth of some other divisions—with the Miami Marlins likely fighting for the worst record and the Washington Nationals projected to lose—its top three teams are among the strongest in the league.
The Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, and Philadelphia Phillies are clearly the best teams in the National League after the Los Angeles Dodgers from the West. All three advanced to the playoffs last season, with the Phillies winning the division with 95 victories. The Mets reached the National League Championship Series, achieving the furthest progression among the trio, and have since acquired Juan Soto in a massive 15-year, $765 million contract.
“It’s going to be a close contest,” said Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns. “The Braves will win more games than last year, and the Phillies are a strong team, determined to be highly competitive this season. We know the challenges that lie ahead.”
Key Additions
The Mets’ lineup is now a formidable threat with Soto batting behind Francisco Lindor and ahead of Pete Alonso. His outstanding performance at Citi Field includes a 1.175 OPS with 12 home runs in 146 plate appearances, showcasing two of the stadium’s five longest home runs.
Young talent remains a strong point for the Nationals, with additions like Lowe providing stability, despite having the lowest offensive statistics of his last four years. Meanwhile, Profar, coming off a career season, has signed with the Braves, aiming to strengthen their lineup in anticipation of a playoff run.
Key Departures and Familiar Faces
The Braves will feel the exit of Fried, but his absence is mitigated by a strong rotation led by Chris Sale, who won the NL Cy Young Award last year. Atlanta anticipates a powerful rotation thanks to returning stars and emerging talents.
On the other hand, the Nationals have a promising young core, enhancing their outlook despite their struggles. Contact hitting leader Josh Bell and defensive stalwart Paul DeJong have joined the roster, supporting their talented prospects like James Wood and CJ Abrams.
