FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Texas Women’s Swim and Dive team made significant strides on the second day of the NCAA Championships held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center, moving into third place. This was largely due to sophomore Jillian Cox’s impressive win in the 500 freestyle event. The team has accumulated a total of 152 points so far, sitting behind Virginia (225 points) and Stanford (178 points), while maintaining a substantial 45.5-point lead over fourth-place Louisville.
In a standout performance, Cox claimed her first NCAA title with a remarkable time of 4:31.58 in the 500 freestyle. The race was intense, with Indiana’s Anna Peplowski initially taking the lead before Cox surged ahead after the 350-yard mark, ultimately finishing with a significant lead in the final 100 yards. This victory marked the first championship for Texas at this year’s nationals.
“I believe I executed my race plan really well,” Cox commented. “It felt like a mature swim for me. Everyone approached the race differently, and I was ready for that. I aimed to start strong but not too fast, and I needed the stamina to maintain my pace.”
In the morning prelims, senior Emma Sticklen set a new school record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:52.11, qualifying for the finals later in the evening. She finished seventh overall in the final with a clocking of 1:52.54, earning All-America honors.
Freshman Campbell Chase excelled in the 200 IM consolation final, placing second and achieving a tenth-place overall finish with a time of 1:53.90, which earned her Honorable Mention All-America recognition. Also, sophomore Campbell Stoll ranked fourth in the consolation final and twelfth overall, finishing in 1:54.78, garnering Honorable Mention All-America honors as well.
As the diving events began, senior Hailey Hernandez and freshman Alejandra Estudillo Torres both qualified for the evening finals, each attaining All-America status. Hernandez finished fifth with a total score of 320.95, while Estudillo Torres was close behind in sixth place with 316.30 points. Sophomore Bayleigh Cranford attained Honorable Mention All-America recognition with a thirteenth-place finish.
The Longhorn team consisting of Grace Cooper, Sticklen, Abby Arens, and Ava Longi finished eighth in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:27.00, earning them All-America honors.
