PHILADELPHIA – The 25th-ranked University of Missouri wrestling team wrapped up day two of the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, achieving five victories throughout the day. The Tigers had two athletes on the podium, ensuring their participation continues into the tournament’s third day. Mizzou currently holds the 14th position with 29 points as they head into the final day of competition.
SESSION III
In the quarterfinals and consolation rounds, two Tigers aimed to progress. Competing at 174 pounds, senior Keegan O’Toole faced Virginia Tech’s Lennox Wolak, showcasing dominance to earn a major decision. This win guaranteed a top-six finish and All-American status for the 2022 and 2023 National Champion.
On the consolation side, redshirt sophomore Cam Steed secured back-to-back wins by fall over competitors from The Citadel and Hofstra, allowing him to move on to the blood round.
SESSION IV
In his fifth semifinal appearance, O’Toole earned a late reversal against Cade DeVos from South Dakota State, marking his second comeback of the tournament. This victory secured him a spot in the finals, continuing his streak of finishing third or higher for five consecutive seasons.
The former two-time champion is set to vie for his third title on Saturday evening in a rematch against Dean Hamiti from Oklahoma State in the Big 12 finals.
As the sole Tiger in the blood round, Steed delivered a remarkable performance, achieving All-American status for the first time in his career. He secured a takedown in the ninth minute against Beau Mantanona from Michigan to take the lead. However, in his second match of the evening, Steed lost a close decision to Stanford’s Hunter Garvin, leading him to the seventh-place bout on Saturday morning where he will face Cam Amine for the third time this season.
TOURNAMENT NOTES
- In Mizzou’s only quarterfinal match, O’Toole faced Wolak again this season, achieving his second major decision victory over the Hokie.
