Damir Davydov was killed by a car bomb outside Moscow, according to Meduza. The incident occurred early on June 9, 2026, in Balashikha’s Aviatorov neighborhood, resulting in his death at the scene.
What happened
A car bomb exploded around 5:30 a.m. as Davydov was leaving a parking space in a BMW X3. Bystanders attempted to assist him while he was still alive; however, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. The Russian federal Investigative Committee confirmed the explosion but did not release the victim’s name.
Reports from several Telegram channels, including VChK-OGPU, indicated that Davydov was the victim. A source cited by the independent Russian outlet Astra stated an improvised explosive device had been placed under his vehicle. The Russian business daily Kommersant estimated the explosive’s power at around 500 grams of TNT.
Davydov, approximately 57 years old, grew up in the closed city of Penza-19. He was associated with Russia’s missile development due to his father’s work at the Start production association, which manufactured nuclear missiles.
Why it matters
The assassination of a senior defense official like Davydov raises concerns about security within the upper echelons of the Russian military. This event highlights ongoing tensions surrounding military leadership, potentially escalating fears regarding stability within Russian defense operations amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Background
On April 2025, a similar car bomb killed Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik in the same neighborhood, leading to the arrest of a suspect identified as Ignat Kuzin. In that case, authorities alleged that the Ukrainian Security Service was involved. Kuzin was sentenced to life in prison in November 2025.
What’s next
The Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case related to the explosion but has not specified charges as of June 9. Further investigations are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding Davydov’s death.
