Latrell Davis Chooses San Diego State
Latrell Davis made his first appearance at Viejas Arena last year while playing for San Jose State as a freshman, scoring 13 points—his highest for a road game.
“I secretly fell in love with the school,” Davis shared. “I could see myself thriving in this environment with this team. It became clear to me that I wanted to attend this school someday.”
And now he will. On Tuesday, Davis committed to San Diego State (SDSU) as a junior transfer, providing the Aztecs with a much-needed sharpshooting guard after the team ranked 217th in 3-point accuracy the previous season. He has two years of eligibility left and is thought to be SDSU’s first player hailing from England.
Impressive Performances Against SDSU
Coach Brian Dutcher and his team may have been convinced of Davis’s skills earlier in the year during matchups against the Aztecs, who boasted the nation’s 16th-best defense. He scored 23 points at Viejas Arena when the Spartans were ahead by 21, before the Aztecs mounted a stunning comeback, winning 71-68. Two weeks later, he tallied 21 points against them.
Strengthening the Roster
“San Diego State is renowned for its defense, so scoring against them is no small feat,” Davis noted, having shot 10 of 18 from 3-point range in those games. “I wanted to establish myself while also confirming that this is truly where I want to be. I love the crowd, the fans, and the atmosphere here.”
Recent Transfers and Future Prospects
Davis is the second transfer from another Mountain West school to join the Aztecs in as many weeks, following former Wyoming forward Jeremiah Oden, who greatly improved his performance against SDSU. Currently, coach Dutcher has only one scholarship available for the 2025-26 season, likely aimed at an unsigned high school senior rather than another transfer.
Skills and Background
Davis serves as a critical addition for the Aztecs, especially if Byrd stays in the NBA Draft or if another guard enters the transfer portal unexpectedly. He brings a much-needed shooting threat capable of creating his own shot. Last season, he averaged 11.1 points while shooting 38.3% from deep and enjoyed a standout stretch where he averaged 18.3 points over ten games.
An Inspiring Journey
Originally from Leeds, England, Davis moved to First Baptist Academy in Naples, Florida, after the pandemic interrupted his sophomore year of high school. After impressive performances leading Great Britain to a 6-1 record at the 2023 under-18 European Championships, he drew attention from San Jose State coaches, who offered him a spot on their team.
Commitment to SDSU
Having entered the transfer portal with hopes of connecting with SDSU, Davis was thrilled when the coaching staff reached out after his strong showings. “They genuinely seem invested in my success,” he remarked, appreciating their honesty throughout the recruitment process. “I can definitely see myself fitting in there.”
