Medieval Combat Comes Alive at MTSU
The Armored Combat Club at Middle Tennessee State University brings the thrill of medieval battles to campus through intense sword and shield duels.
The Rise of Armored MMA
Armored MMA has gained significant popularity across the United States in a short period. This full-contact sport combines traditional MMA techniques with the unique aspects of medieval weaponry, creating a distinct experience for participants.
A Growing Presence on Campus
MTSU Armored Combat is making waves in Murfreesboro, attracting attention from students who witness the club’s activities. Founded by Andrew Griffith and Rafael Rosaly, the club is quickly establishing its identity on campus.
Founding Story
Griffith and Rosaly met at Nashville Armored Combat, the largest medieval MMA training facility in North America, where they discovered they both attended MTSU. This serendipitous encounter sparked the idea to collaborate and form the club.
Experience and Transition
Griffith brought years of sword fighting experience to the table, having started training in armored combat at 15. His prior experience with an MTSU lightsaber fencing club laid the groundwork for the Armored Combat Club.
A Welcoming Environment
The sport attracts a diverse group of competitors, from seasoned martial artists to medieval enthusiasts. Despite the demanding nature of the sport, members emphasize a culture of respect and mentorship for newcomers.
Training and Culture
The club provides “soft kits” for new members, enabling them to practice safely with foam weapons before advancing to real swords and armor. This approach helps people get fit while having fun, all while fostering exploration of medieval culture through various activities including game nights and sword fighting.
Future Aspirations
As the club continues to grow, its members are focused on gaining official recognition from MTSU and securing a dedicated practice space, which would enhance their training and visibility on campus. They welcome all interested participants to reach out via their social media platforms.
