Hello everyone! South Africans might have forgotten what their players look like, but not their names. Quinton de Kock and Anrich Nortje have not donned the national jersey since the T20 World Cup final in Barbados last June.
During their absence, South Africa has played 33 matches across Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. In contrast, De Kock has been active in 35 matches across three different franchises, while Nortje participated in 23 matches for four different teams. Recently, both players were seen in action for Kolkata Knight Riders against Punjab Kings in the IPL, showcasing the complexity of their situations.
De Kock retired from Test cricket in December 2021 and from ODIs after the 2023 World Cup, leaving his T20I future in doubt. Rob Walter, South Africa’s outgoing white-ball coach, remarked in September that he had left the door open for De Kock to return if he chooses.
Walter, who is leaving at the end of the month, suggested that his successor, likely Test coach Shukri Conrad, may have the opportunity to persuade De Kock to re-enter the T20I squad. Meanwhile, Nortje turned down a CSA contract in March 2024, opting to concentrate on franchise cricket and T20Is, despite a series of injuries impacting his participation.
Nortje made his return in a recent IPL match, where he appeared to be finding his rhythm after a lengthy absence due to a back injury. His bowling included a 150kph delivery that even caught De Kock off-guard, reflecting his potential to disturb batsmen upon making a comeback.
Despite De Kock’s mixed performances in the IPL, his presence remains a draw for fans back home, as does Nortje’s striking demeanor on the field. The IPL serves as a platform for South African fans to reconnect with their lesser-seen talents – a chance to watch players who may not be frequently showcased on the international stage.
