As Giddey enters restricted free agency this summer, he stands to receive a substantial contract following a notable finish to the regular season. In the aftermath of Thursday’s game, Richard Jefferson had a strong message for the Bulls regarding Giddey: “Pay that man his money.” Giddey finished the game with 25 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and three turnovers.
Despite a challenging game where the Heat focused their defense on him, the 22-year-old managed to be Chicago’s most consistent offensive player. The Bulls fell victim to a slow defensive start, leading to a disappointing end to a season that mirrored previous ones, as the team barely qualified for the play-in tournament without appearing to be serious contenders.
The Heat, led by Tyler Herro with 38 points, served as a stark reminder of the gaps the Bulls need to close to be contenders for the championship. Nevertheless, there remains a young core in Chicago to build around, with Giddey playing through a muscle tear in his right hand, labeled as a “pain tolerance injury” according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Early in the game, the Heat exploited Giddey’s defensive vulnerabilities. Herro quickly scored on a layup, signaling a trend as the Heat accumulated a majority of their points in the paint during the opening minutes. Although Giddey faced difficulties on defense, he mirrored the intensity on offense that made him one of the most in-form players since the All-Star break.
The Bulls struggled throughout the game, finding themselves down 71-47 at halftime, a deficit that marked Miami’s largest lead at the break this season. Chicago attempted to rally in the third quarter by tightening their defense, but the Heat managed to maintain control and secured the victory. Miami will now face Dyson Daniels and the Hawks on Saturday, with the winner going on to meet the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs.
