Recreating a Lost MacKenzie Design
Just under 40 minutes from the renowned Augusta National Golf Club, originally designed by architect Alister MacKenzie, a businessman from Augusta is working on a replica of MacKenzie’s El Boquerón, a design that had been presumed lost for decades.
Alister MacKenzie’s Legacy
MacKenzie, who was once a surgeon in the UK, has designed some of the most esteemed golf courses globally, such as Cypress Point, Crystal Downs, Lahinch, and Royal Melbourne. His most ambitious project, El Boquerón in Argentina, was never built, and its plans remained missing for almost 40 years.
From Vision to Reality
The recent rediscovery of the original plans coupled with Augusta businessman Wes Farrell’s acquisition of picturesque land in Jackson, SC, has made it possible to bring MacKenzie’s last design to fruition.
Introducing the 21 Club
Farrell expresses a spiritual connection to the land, saying, “We believe divine providence led us to this location, and we aim to develop a club inspired by MacKenzie’s vision. The increasing interest in golf in this region reinforces our belief in the demand for such a club.”
Elevated Standards of Golf
The area boasts several prestigious golf courses, including the famous Augusta National and nearby Palmetto Country Club. To realize his MacKenzie-inspired vision, Farrell has teamed up with Brian Zager from Wisconsin, known for his work with Tom Doak and innovative computer modeling that designed the Lido Course at Sand Valley, Wisconsin.
Unique Course Features
While the 21 Club will not be a straightforward replica of El Boquerón, it will incorporate MacKenzie’s design principles and routing from nearly a century ago. With features including nine double greens for 18 holes, Zager added, “This design is distinctive; no championship course that I know of matches our commitment to double greens in this manner.”
Future Plans and Growing Interest
Construction is aiming for a soft opening in spring 2026, followed by a full 18-hole layout in the fall. With nearly 5,000 inquiries received since the announcement in 2024, the club is off to a strong start, accepting founding members eager to witness the coming to life of this unique MacKenzie-inspired course.
A New Era for MacKenzie-Inspired Golf
The 21 Club promises to uphold MacKenzie’s esteemed architectural legacy while introducing new elements and functionalities. There are plans for further developments, including another 18-hole course and various member amenities, ensuring the spirit of golf is alive and thriving for future generations.
