Boxing has transformed to host thrilling events that offer enhanced experiences for fans. This evolution started years back when promoters acknowledged that die-hard boxing fans desired more than just the main event. From the iconic fight cards of the 90s to current blockbuster events, multi-fight shows have become the preferred way to keep audiences captivated. The forthcoming Ring Magazine Card set for July 12 in New York continues this tradition with not one, but three significant matchups that have boxing enthusiasts eagerly anticipating the date.
The third edition of the Ring Magazine fight series is expected to offer excitement throughout the night. Featuring two title fights and a title eliminator that displays some of boxing’s most electrifying talents, this DAZN-exclusive card is poised to be a must-see for the summer.
Main Event: Edgar Berlanga vs. Hamzah Sheeraz
The featured matchup showcases Brooklyn’s Edgar Berlanga taking on the unbeaten Hamzah Sheeraz from England in a WBC super middleweight title eliminator. Berlanga, currently sitting at #9 in The Ring rankings, is eager to rebound after facing his first professional defeat against Canelo Alvarez last September. That loss provided invaluable lessons, and the 27-year-old Puerto Rican is determined to prove he belongs among the top tier of the division with his impressive record of 23 wins, 1 loss, and 18 knockouts.
Sheeraz presents an intriguing challenge as he steps up from middleweight, where he recently fought to a disputed draw against Carlos Adames for the WBC title. At 25 years old, the Englishman boasts an impressive knockout rate (17 KOs in 21 wins) and a noticeable height and reach advantage over Berlanga. The victor of this matchup will likely put themselves in line for a shot at the WBC super middleweight championship, currently held by Canelo.
Championship Doubleheader On The Undercard
The co-main event of Ring Magazine 3 features one of boxing’s most skilled champions, Shakur Stevenson, defending his WBC lightweight title against the undefeated Mexican aggressor William Zepeda. Stevenson enters with a perfect 23-0 record and his smooth southpaw technique, facing perhaps his toughest opponent yet. He has faced criticism in the past for a more cautious fighting style.
Zepeda, known for applying relentless pressure and possessing heavy hands (27 KOs in 33 wins), could be the perfect matchup for Stevenson’s skills. Fresh off two victories against former champion Tevin Farmer, Zepeda has earned his title shot through hard-fought victories. However, he will need to navigate Stevenson’s defensive expertise and powerful counterattacks.
The second title bout features Alberto Puello defending his WBC junior welterweight title against former champion Subriel Matias, promising to be a thrilling slugfest. Puello, who remains undefeated at 24-0, possesses technical skills and exceptional boxing intellect. In contrast, the knockout artist Matias, with all 22 of his wins coming by way of knockout, is capable of turning the tide of any fight instantly.
Lastly, the card will showcase a bout between David Morrell and undefeated Russian Imam Khataev in an intriguing light heavyweight fight. Morrell seeks to rebound from his first career loss against David Benavidez, while Khataev is determined to maintain his unblemished record.
