Fleeing Bangladesh Amid Political Unrest
Former head coach of the Bangladesh cricket team, Chandika Hathurusingha, revealed on Sunday that he feared for his safety while trying to leave the country. At the time, Bangladesh was experiencing significant political unrest due to a student-led movement, prompting Hathurusingha to flee amid growing security concerns.
Suspension and Departure
Hathurusingha departed after being suspended by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for alleged breaches of their code of conduct. Although he denied the allegations, he had kept silent about his experiences until his recent interview with Code Sport.
Warning Signs
“The last thing the Bangladesh CEO said to me was that I should leave immediately and not inform any board members about my departure,” Hathurusingha recounted. This advice raised alarm bells for him, especially since he was without his usual security detail on that day.
Urgency of Escape
He hurried to withdraw money from the bank to facilitate his exit while simultaneously being informed through the news about his sacking and allegations against him. The bank manager even insisted on accompanying him for security reasons, stating it wasn’t safe for him to be on the streets.
Allegations of Assault
Hathurusingha has firmly denied claims that he assaulted player Nasum Ahmed during a match against New Zealand, suggesting instead that he merely tapped the player on the back for attention. He expressed frustration that the BCB never allowed him to present his defense against these allegations, which he feels have severely impacted his career.
Support from Colleagues
His former assistant coaches have come to his defense, asserting that the allegations are unfounded. Nic Pothas emphasized Hathurusingha’s professionalism, while Rangana Herath stated that there was no evidence to support the claims, reinforcing the idea that the situation has severely affected Hathurusingha’s life post-Bangladesh.
