New Clubhouse to be Built near Alexandria Golf Club
A new clubhouse, the Little Darling Junior Learning Center, is planned for the upcoming nine-hole, par-3 golf course located just south of the Alexandria Golf Club. The facility will span approximately 2,200 square feet and will feature a parking lot. It will also include a viewing area for family members of junior golfers to watch them play on the course.
Construction Timeline and City Council Approval
Construction could begin as early as this season. During a recent meeting, the Alexandria City Council granted a conditional use permit to AGC, which comes with six stipulations:
- Required building and grading permits.
- A sign permit must be obtained.
- A minimum of 48 paved parking stalls is mandatory.
- Connections to water and sanitary sewer are required, with potential connection fees.
- Exterior lighting must be directed away from public streets.
- The city engineer must approve the final drainage plan.
Community Initiatives for Heart Safety
In a separate community-led initiative, efforts are underway to make downtown Alexandria heart-safe by installing Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in up to six locations. AEDs are portable devices used to treat sudden cardiac arrest, which presents a significant health risk.
Council Discussion on AED Ownership
The council discussed a proposal for the city to take ownership of the AEDs and to handle their annual maintenance. The cost is projected to be $3,600 per year starting in 2026, with additional long-term costs for replacement expected in 10 years. The current phase of the project involves fundraising for the purchase and installation of the devices.
Traffic and Community Events Approved
The council approved special event permits, including the 16th annual “Ride of Silence”, set for May 21, aimed at raising awareness about cyclist safety. About 80 participants are expected for this silent ride in memory of those affected by cycling accidents.
Progress on Childcare and Traffic Calming Measures
The Nokomis Childcare Project is receiving additional funding to build a duplex for family childcare providers. The total project costs have increased, leading the Economic Development Authority to support the funding shortfall. Moreover, temporary traffic calming islands will be installed at several intersections this summer to improve safety during the busy traffic months.
