Formula One Returns to the U.S. at Miami Grand Prix
Formula One is set to make its comeback to the United States this weekend for the Miami Grand Prix, marking its fourth edition. With five races completed so far, it’s time to evaluate the performance of the top drivers. From championship contenders like McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and reigning four-time champion Max Verstappen to the lesser-performing drivers, the season provides a basis for early assessments of all 20 participants in the paddock.
Driver Rankings Ahead of Miami
Piastri, having secured three race wins and consecutive victories in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, establishes himself firmly in the spotlight. The 24-year-old Australian has exhibited remarkable composure and consistency in his McLaren, showing a depth of performance that his teammate, Lando Norris, has struggled to match. Although it may be premature to label him the title favorite, it’s hard to envision a significant decline in his confidence or performance without substantial challenges from the competitors behind him.
Verstappen’s Tenacity with Red Bull
Four-time champion Max Verstappen’s capability to extract strong performances from a relatively underperforming Red Bull is impressive. Team principal Christian Horner praised his recent qualifying lap in Japan as one of the best in his career. Following this, he claimed pole position in Saudi Arabia and engaged Piastri in a fierce race. Currently sitting in third place, it appears challenging for him to surpass either McLaren driver, yet his accomplishments with less competitive machinery are commendable.
Russell Shows Consistency
Valttery Russell emerges as a key competitor thanks to his reliability, having made the podium three times—equivalent to Verstappen’s record—while never finishing lower than fifth. Competing in the current iteration of the W16, winning might be another story, but his first victory of the season seems likely in the near future.
Norris Struggles to Meet Expectations
Once seen as a title favorite, Lando Norris has failed to maintain consistency since the Australian opener. A poor qualifying session led to his first off-podium finish in Saudi Arabia. While not underperforming on race days, Norris has admitted to not living up to high expectations but remains well-placed to contend for the championship.
Albon Shines for Williams
Alexander Albon has been a standout performer for Williams this season. He’s the only driver outside of the top four teams to earn points across four different races. While Carlos Sainz also shows signs of improvement, Albon’s experience has proven valuable for his team.
Young Talent and Veteran Adjustments
The 18-year-old Antonelli has made a strong impression in F1, showing poise beyond his years since debuting in Australia. Additionally, Lewis Hamilton is still adjusting to life at Ferrari, struggling with qualifying performances despite his extensive experience. After a shaky start to the season, Fernando Alonso remains consistent and seems on the cusp of scoring points.
