The apocalypse has arrived on Netflix with the release of “The Eternaut.”
While fans of post-apocalyptic narratives are likely tuned into “The Last Of Us” Season 2 on Max, Netflix has introduced its own six-episode take on the end of days with “The Eternaut.”
In contrast to “The Last Of Us“, “The Eternaut” focuses on a lethal toxic snowstorm rather than deadly fungi. The series unfolds a tense, intricate (though somewhat slow) survival story, ideal for binge-watching.
As I anticipated, “The Eternaut” seems to have resonated well with viewers—it recently climbed to the No. 5 position in Netflix’s top 10 most-watched shows list.
What is ‘The Eternaut’ about?
This adaptation stems from the Argentine sci-fi graphic novel by Héctor G. Oesterheld and Francisco Solano Lopez. The plot kicks off on a summer night in Buenos Aires when a mysterious and deadly snowfall decimates the population and isolates thousands of others.
The series follows Juan Salvo (Ricardo Darín) and his friends as they navigate a desperate battle for survival. They soon discover that the unique snowstorm is just the prelude to a vicious invasion by a foreign army.
Should you stream ‘The Eternaut’ on Netflix?
From the first episode, which portrays the chilling onset of the snowstorm, the series has drawn me in. The survivors begin to grasp their dire situation, prompting early exploratory actions. While not action-packed, it is fraught with tension and unsettling implications from the deadly snowfall.
Though mixed reviews came in initially, the show currently holds an 89% rating from critics and a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating a positive reception. Reviewers from Collider and Ready Steady Cut praised it as a character-driven, visually arresting apocalyptic tale, making “The Eternaut” a worthy addition to your Netflix watchlist if you’re a fan of the genre.
