FRISCO, Texas
The journey for the newest Dallas Cowboys rookies, including draft selections and undrafted free agents, is moving from the surreal to the real. They recently gathered for rookie minicamp, seizing the opportunity to demonstrate their potential for roster positions and roles on the depth chart, with Shemar James as a notable standout among them.
Introducing Shemar James
James, a dynamic linebacker from the University of Florida and a native of Mobile, has built a solid reputation during his college career. Coincidentally, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer also played football at Florida, where he won a national championship in 1996.
Building a Bond
This connection is significant, as Schottenheimer reminded James of their shared background during their initial conversation, which took place at the 2025 NFL Combine. Their relationship is off to a promising start.
James on His Rapport with Schottenheimer
“We’re definitely tight right now, like best friends,” James expressed with enthusiasm. “We’re both Gators, so go Gators.”
Excitement and Interests
His enthusiasm extends beyond football. During his first media interview at the Cowboys’ facilities, James shared details about his love for dogs (he has a pit bull), classic cars (his dream is a Ford GT500), and, of course, the Cowboys.
James’ Role in the Team
Currently, he identifies as a Will (weakside) linebacker, aiming to excel in that position. James also expressed pride in contributing to special teams, having played that role throughout his college career. He stated, “I hope I get to be on special teams.”
Reflections on His Journey
James is gradually realizing the dream of being part of the NFL and the Cowboys. He recalled the excitement he felt when the Cowboys traded up to select him, stating that it was particularly meaningful because it has been his family’s favorite team for as long as he can remember. He confidently asserted, “It’s a dream come true and truly special for me.”
