Tiger Woods: A Historic Beginning
Over 25 years ago, Tiger Woods began to establish himself as one of the greatest golfers in history. At only 21, he made headlines by winning his first Masters Tournament in 1997, becoming both the youngest champion and the first Black golfer to win a major.
The “Tiger Effect” and Diversity in Golf
Following Woods’ success, there was hope for a significant increase in Black representation on the professional golf circuit. However, this did not materialize. The PGA Tour did not see another Black golfer until Joseph Bramlett joined in 2010. While seven other Black golfers have won PGA events, Woods remains the only one to win a major.
Nonprofits Advocate for Change
Organizations like the Advocates Professional Golf Association (APGA) and We Golf Now are actively promoting diversity within the sport. Solomon Hughes, APGA’s COO, emphasized their mission: “We aim to inspire an inclusive future through golf via tournaments, youth clinics, and scholarships.”
A Rising Star: Chase Johnson
These efforts offer opportunities to players from varied backgrounds, exemplified by Chase Johnson. In three seasons with the APGA Tour, the 29-year-old has achieved seven victories and participated in eight PGA Tour events since 2021.
Memorable Moments
Johnson’s defining memory occurred in September 2023 at the APGA’s Farmers Insurance Fall Series. Needing a critical 20-foot putt on the final hole, he successfully made the shot with his parents watching, celebrating his victory with a fist pump.
Support from APGA
Following a successful 2023 season, which included winning the John Shippen Invitational and earning a spot in the PGA Tour, Johnson was honored with the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption to The Genesis Invitational, where he met his idol, Tiger Woods.
The APGA’s Foundation and Future Goals
The APGA was founded in 2010 with the mission of fostering inclusivity in golf. They offer scholarships, youth clinics, and professional tournaments. As Nick Ragone from Jefferson Health pointed out, creating real opportunities is essential, and the APGA plays a critical role in this endeavor.
