Reports suggest that Newcastle United may use defender Matt Targett as part of a £60 million deal to acquire Southampton’s Tyler Dibling.
The ex-Aston Villa player is reportedly facing a potential exit from the League Cup winners, as the club aims to reduce its wage expenses ahead of the upcoming PSR health check deadline.
According to ChronicleLive, Targett commands a significant wage of £100,000 per week and has one year left on his contract in the Northeast.
Newcastle is reportedly focused on managing their wage bill this summer, making Targett’s future uncertain. The left-back has only managed to play 19 minutes of Premier League football this season due to injuries.
Sources indicate that the left-back could return to St Mary’s to facilitate a £60 million transfer for young talent Dibling, a product of the Southampton academy. The Saints are eager to capitalize on the interest in Dibling, who shone despite his team’s relegation to the Championship.
Initially, Southampton valued the 19-year-old at £100 million, an unrealistic figure for most clubs at this stage. While Targett’s return could benefit both sides, his substantial wages may complicate negotiations.
This summer will be critical for Targett as he approaches the final year of his contract with Newcastle. Having played only five Premier League matches in two seasons, he will have to contend with strong competition for his place.
