Stanford Dominates at NCAA Women’s Golf Championships
CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA — Stanford achieved an impressive 18-under (270) score, setting a new course championship record and leading the 2025 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships by 15 strokes after three rounds at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa (6,330 yards/par 72).
Despite some morning rain, Stanford delivered a historic performance, establishing a new NCAA women’s golf championship record for lowest single-round score relative to par. This score is also tied for third-best in the history of Stanford’s golf program. The final round on Monday will finalize rankings for the eight teams moving on to match play, alongside crowning the individual champion.
Freshman Meja Örtengren spearheaded Stanford’s success with five straight birdies on the back nine, finishing with a 6-under (66). Örtengren commented, “It was a very steady round with good shots and putts during the back nine.”
Alongside Örtengren, notable performances came from Paula Martin Sampedro (5-under), Kelly Xu (4-under), and Andrea Revuelta (3-under). Sampedro, who finished third last year, is currently in second place on the individual leaderboard at 8-under.
Sampedro expressed her focus, saying, “Winning the individual championship would be very special. However, my priority is to simply play my game and stick to my plan, as the team is performing excellently.”
Arkansas made a significant move on the leaderboard, climbing six positions after an 8-under (280) round, marking their best NCAA championship score ever. Sophomore Maria José Marin made waves with a personal best 7-under (65), taking the individual lead by a stroke. “This achievement shows I’m at the top of my game,” Marin stated, highlighting her consistent performance at La Costa.
Northwestern maintained its second-place position, also shooting an 8-under (280) for their best round in NCAA women’s golf championship history. Lauren Nguyen contributed significantly with a 5-under (67), including an eagle and multiple birdies. “Focusing on each hole individually was crucial for my performance,” Nguyen noted.
The tournament continues with 15 teams, including Stanford and Northwestern, vying for positions for the final round on Monday. Teams will compete for eight match-play seeds, with a champion decided through match-play on May 20 and 21.
The scoring average for the third round was 74.32, an improvement compared to the previous rounds, with averages of 74.69 and 74.94.
