Randall Herbst Returns to Minot State as Head Men’s Basketball Coach
Randall Herbst is set to take the reins as the new head coach for the Minot State Beavers men’s basketball team.
Kevin Harmon, Minot State’s Vice President for Student Affairs and Intercollegiate Athletics, announced that Herbst has signed a contract to become the Beavers’ 16th head coach, making a comeback to Minot after serving two seasons as an assistant under Matt Murken.
“We are excited to welcome Randall Herbst back to Minot State University as our next head men’s basketball coach,” Harmon stated. “His proven success record in the NSIC and familiarity with our conference makes him the perfect candidate to lead our program. His connections within the Upper Midwest will be essential as we strive to establish a winning culture at Minot State.”
Dr. Steven Shirley, President of Minot State, also expressed enthusiasm: “Herbst’s success in North Dakota and the NSIC gives us great confidence in his leadership for our men’s basketball program.”
Herbst arrives from the University of North Dakota, where he served as a top assistant under head coach Paul Sather for three seasons. He previously held an assistant coaching role at Minot State and now replaces Murken, who recently accepted a role at the University of South Dakota.
“I’m honored to be back at Minot State University,” Herbst remarked. “I appreciate the chance to be a head coach again and look forward to bringing an exciting style of play to the community.” He officially begins his duties Thursday and invites the public to a “Meet and Greet” on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the Beaver Dam at the Minot State Student Center.
Herbst boasts extensive coaching experience with a solid head coaching record of 72-47, including an exceptional run at the University of Mary. He also has a successful history across various NCAA levels and was instrumental in guiding several notable players throughout his career.
