The classic “Look What You Made Me Do” is currently unavailable for contact, as it has been fully refreshed and re-recorded in preparation for Taylor Swift‘s upcoming album, Reputation (Taylor’s Version). This new version debuted in the recent episode of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.
Featured at the start of the episode, a group of handmaids, led by June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss), initiate a rebellion against the Commanders. The episode opens with the updated rendition of Swift’s lead single from Reputation, which retains elements of Jack Antonoff’s original synths and driving drum beats, now enhanced by a mature vocal delivery from Swift. The scene showcases the handmaids’ resolve as they move in formation, with June narrowly escaping an explosion while hiding in the back of a truck.
Emmy-winning actress and executive producer Elisabeth Moss shared with Billboard that this collaboration has been a long-anticipated milestone for the series.
“I’ve wanted to incorporate a Taylor song for many years, and we finally found the ideal moment for it. I’m thrilled we waited, as it couldn’t have been more fitting,” Moss expressed. She attended a Toronto concert of The Eras Tour with her co-star Bradley Whitford, adding, “Taylor has greatly inspired me personally. Speaking on behalf of our entire cast, all of whom are Swifties, it’s a tremendous honor to feature her music in the concluding episodes of our show.”
Moss further revealed her conversations with editor Wendy Hallam Martin about finding a fitting place for a Taylor track in the series’ final episodes. Hallam Martin emphasized that sometimes music choices feel predestined, and this was one of those instances.
“We experimented with various songs for this scene, and considering how much Lizzie (Moss) desired a powerful female voice, it became clear that Taylor was the right artist both lyrically and tonally,” Hallam Martin stated. “Our fierce protagonist, June, truly embodies the sentiment of ‘look what you made me do,’ making the song an ideal match. It synchronously aligned with the scene, hitting all the thematic and rhythmic beats perfectly.”
Viewers can catch the opening of season 6, episode 9 of The Handmaid’s Tale and listen for the newly re-recorded “Look What You Made Me Do.” This feature offers one of the first glimpses of Reputation (Taylor’s Version), showcasing the complete first and second verses, along with two choruses of the track.
