Duane Ford: A Legacy in Boxing
Duane Ford, who served as the commissioner of Nevada, was at the forefront during boxing’s golden age, notably overseeing the era of the four kings: Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, and Durán. Throughout his career, he was a part of the World Boxing Council Board of Governors, sat as a judge in over 300 world title bouts, and recently held the position of president of the NABF until last Saturday.
In recognition of his contributions, the WBC has awarded him the title of vice president for life.
Impact on Boxing Regulations
Ford was a pivotal boxing commissioner and as chair of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, he played a significant role in advancing crucial changes within the WBC’s regulations, particularly those aimed at safeguarding the health and wellbeing of fighters post-career. Notably, during his tenure, the Muhammad Ali Act had yet to be enacted. This law emerged when a select group of American politicians leveraged boxing to gain publicity during their campaigns—only to later abandon the sport. This legislation subsequently created a significant divide between boxing organizations and the American boxing community.
Commissioner’s Dilemma
The act bars commissioners from being affiliated with any boxing organization. This limitation forced esteemed commissioners like Duane Ford and Dickie Cole to choose between their governmental roles and positions within the NABF or the WBC.
The Rifts within the Boxing Community
As it stands, no commissioner can participate in the organizations, leading to a deep divide. Young commissioners now view these organizations as outsiders or even adversaries, a perspective shaped by the existing realities they entered into boxing. This disconnect has hindered the implementation of vital changes that the WBC has made globally.
Innovative Rules and Reforms
Furthermore, the WBC introduced technologies such as instant replay over 15 years ago, yet many U.S. commissions still do not adopt it as a standard. Nevada has effectively utilized instant replay for years, yet persuading other jurisdictions remains a daunting challenge. Other progressive rules, like open scoring—wherein judges’ scores are announced after specific rounds—have yet to gain acceptance in the U.S., preventing the necessary fairness and transparency in the sport.
A Vision for the Future
The NABF has outlined an action plan addressing urgent objectives moving forward. This includes enhancing the women’s boxing program with a newly formed committee and reinforcing training and certification initiatives for judges and referees. Social responsibility efforts are also emphasized, inviting participation in the WBC Cares programs.
Historical Significance
Did you know? The NABF Championship has produced numerous legendary champions, including Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Saúl Canelo Álvarez, who have risen to global fame after holding this title.
