The Significance of Nicknames
Nicknames are an enduring aspect of people’s lives. As previously noted, a nickname can originate during childhood, and it’s up to the individual to either embrace or reject it. For instance, my parents affectionately dubbed me “Spud” during my early years, a name that still holds meaning for me today. In contrast, some individuals outgrow their childhood nicknames and request their loved ones to stop using them.
MMA Fighters and Their Unique Nicknames
In the world of MMA, fighters adopt their own nicknames. These aliases are selected by the contestants, and the fighter’s performance often determines how well the nickname resonates with fans. For those needing a reminder on the significance of nicknames, be sure to check the notes from our inaugural meeting last November.
All-Nicknames Club: Inductee No. 14 – “Crispy” Carli Judice
Our first inductee today is a fighter who made her debut in the UFC just a few months back. In March, Carli Judice (4-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) kicked off the night at UFC Vegas 104 with a flyweight bout against Yuneisy Duben (6-1, 1 NC MMA, 0-1 UFC), who was debuting in the UFC after securing her contract during the Contender Series.
Crispy Delivers an Impressive KO
Much like Duben did previously, Carli Judice also made her mark by scoring a spectacular finish. In the first round, she executed a head kick that knocked out Duben instantly. Her performance not only garnered attention but also earned her a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus.
All-Nicknames Club: Inductee No. 15 – Malcolm “The Machine” Wellmaker
Moving on to the bantamweight division, our next inductee is a rising star with an impressive nickname. On April 26, Malcolm Wellmaker (9-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) made a remarkable UFC debut at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, thrilling fans with a first-round knockout against Adam Bramhald (14-3 MMA).
The Machine Makes Short Work of Saaiman
Against Cameron Saaiman (9-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC), Wellmaker proved his nickname fitting, winning swiftly with an overhand right punch. His outstanding effort also secured him a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus, and soon after, he quit his day job in welding, fulfilling a dream he’d held for years.
All-Nicknames Club: Inductee No. 16 – Jimmy “The Brute” Crute
For our last inductee, we welcome back a light heavyweight fighter who briefly stepped back from competition. Jimmy Crute (12-4-2 MMA, 4-4-2 UFC) paused his fighting career in summer 2023 due to an unhealthy obsession with the sport. He later returned to face Rodolfo Bellato (12-2-1 MMA, 1-0-1 UFC) at UFC 312, resulting in a majority draw.
The Fitting Alias of “The Brute”
Crute’s nickname, “The Brute,” perfectly encapsulates his fighting style. Before joining the UFC, he was undefeated at 7-0 in Hex Fight Series, where he captured the light heavyweight championship. His career showcases his imposing presence inside the cage, making his nickname particularly apt.
Conclusion of the Meeting
